About CISTER
CISTER is a world-leading research unit in the fields of Real-Time Embedded Computing Systems (RTECS) and Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) with researchers from over 20 countries and more than 300 international partners from academia and industry.
Based in Porto, Portugal, CISTER is the only research unit in Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) and Computer Science (CS) in the country to have been consistently rated "Excellent" in the FCT international evaluations in 2003, 2008 and 2018.Framed within ISEP (main host) and the University of Porto (FEUP), CISTER is at the forefront of RTECS and CPS research and has produced over 20 PhD graduates in the period 2015-2023 alone, who now hold influential positions in academia and industry.
CISTER is in a 3-storey, stand-alone building with an area of more than 2000 square meters, which is entirely dedicated to its activities. It features various rooms, laboratories, meeting rooms, a library, a cafeteria, a kitchen, auditoriums, and a multi-cultural prayer room. Equipped with cutting-edge technologies spanning safety-critical domains such as automotive, avionics, smart cities and building automation, CISTER's laboratories provide an ideal environment for ground-breaking research.
Over the years, CISTER has hosted numerous flagship conferences on real-time systems, cyber-physical systems, wireless sensor networks and factory communication systems (see list at https://www.cister-labs.pt/events/_gallery_of_hosted_conferences/). In addition, CISTER has a distinguished track record of involvement in high-impact international projects, ranging from industry-driven European projects to national and international initiatives focused on fundamental research (see full list of projects at https://www.cister-labs.pt/projects).
Who are we looking for?
CISTER is currently soliciting applications from enthusiastic individuals for its Graduate Research Program, which offers opportunities in the following areas: (1) Embedded and Real-Time Computing Systems, (2) Cyber-Physical Systems, (3) Internet of Things, and (4) Mobility and related technologies. Your Expression of Interest (EOI) will be evaluated by esteemed members of CISTER who will assess whether the program admission criteria are met and ensure that appropriate supervision and resources are available for your chosen area of study.
What do we offer?
CISTER offers research fellowships for a period of up to four years with a salary of between € 13,000.00 and € 15,000.00 (after tax) per year as well as payment of tuition fees (€ 3500.00 per year). A research stay at CISTER offers the opportunity to become part of national and international networks of researchers and companies in an exceptional, dynamic, multicultural and stimulating research environment. In addition, CISTER actively promotes cultural activities, soft skills development initiatives and Portuguese language courses.
How to submit your expression of interest?
Prospective candidates must submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) via email to "jobs@cister-labs.pt" with the subject line "CISTER-PDS2024-EOI". Following this step, candidates will be invited to formally apply for admission to one of CISTER’s academic partnerships. These include the PDEEC and PRODEI programs offered by FEUP and the MAP-i initiative led by the Universities of Minho, Aveiro and Porto. Exceptional candidates may also have the opportunity to participate in a Dual PhD Program with Carnegie Mellon University. The following documentation is required with your submission:
- ID document (Citizen Card / ID Card / Passport) or declaration containing the identification data.
- Graduation Certificate (or equivalent academic experience) in ECE, CS, SE, AM or related areas from a higher education programme.
- Certificate of the higher education institution listing the curricular units completed, the regime (semester/year), the number of credit units/ECTS, and description of the grading scale used (min/max) -- Official English language translation is required where studies were completed in a language other than English.
