Security in Embedded Systems: the Wireless Sensor Networks case
23, Apr, 2019 15:30-16:30 (1 hour)
CISTER, Porto, Portugal

The design and the development of a complete Embedded System often involve a complex set of functional and non-functional requirements and design choices. In this context, when the security requirements of an Embedded System are not a primary design goal and deadlines for the product release are present, developers often leave the security-related aspects out in order to ship a working system on time. This trend has a tremendous consequence: a large number of Embedded Systems (both consumer- and industrial-grade) suffers from security vulnerabilities which can be exploited and, eventually, give attackers the complete control of the system and of everything connected to it.
In this talk, we will present an overview of a particular class of Embedded Systems: the Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN). In WSN platforms, providing security is complex because (1) the small memory and storage; (2) the poor performance; and (3) energy constraints, pose multiple challenges to developers. We will analyze why common solutions fail to provide a robust security layer and how ad-hoc techniques can be used to provide some basic security features without impacting the WSN overall performance.

Walter received his "Laurea Triennale" degree (BS) in 2014 and his "Laurea Magistrale" (MS) cum laude in 2016 at the University of L'Aquila, where he is currently pursuing his PhD. His research focuses on Software and Embedded Systems Security (both attack and defence), WSN platforms and protocols, Cryptography (cryptoanalysis, software and hardware implementations), Low-level software (e.g. OSs, Firmwares, Drivers etc.) analysis, reverse-engineering, digital hardware design.
