Throughput Fairness Analysis of Reservation Protocols of WiMedia MAC

Abstract:
Medium Access Control (MAC) layer protocols play an imperative role to handle the challenging QoS provisioning issue by efficiently controlling the accessing and utilizing of wireless channels. WiMedia standardized a fully distributed high data rate communication using ultra wideband (UWB) for wireless personal area networks (WPANs). Ultra Wideband (UWB) offers a number of advantages over other short range technologies e.g. high data rates, low power and precise positioning, which makes it more suitable for the WPAN. The WiMedia device accesses the channel via a superframe and the Medium Access Slots (MASs) in superframe can be reserved via Distributed Reservation Protocol (DRP) or accessed via Prioritized Contention Access (PCA). This chapter presents the analysis of the WiMedia reservation protocols. By means of simulations and analytical results we show how the QoS provisioning issue is handled by the MAC protocols and how fairness is provided to users in terms of throughput and delay, shortening the time they spend trying to access the wireless medium. In turn, the net effect contributes to energy saving for data communication at the nodes, and adds to the Quality of Experience (QoE) of the user.
