The Need for a New Generation of Engineers

Although current and future industry main technological trends are increasingly falling into one or several of the categories of Critical Systems, the necessary kind of expertise for their design and implementation is not commonly found in the curricula of traditional Software Engineering and Computer Science degrees. It is therefore pivotal that this gap is filled with an adequate focus in such areas of knowledge to spring bright, young engineering professionals able to address these challenges both within industrial environments as well as academic or governmental.

The goal of this MSc is to contribute to overcome this shortage in the short/mid-term by provinding future students with the necessary knowledge and tools so that they become part on a new generation of Engineers which excel at addressing the challenges of designing and developing Critical Computing Systems, thus contributing at the long run to enable a competitive and sustainable growth of the economical ecosystem focused on this class of systems.

Objectives

The CCS (Computer Critical Systems) Engineering Master is designed to provide an appropriate educational foundation for prospective students who want to become experts in the area. These include either recent graduates in areas such as software engineering, electronics and computers engineering, computer science, and related fields, but also professionals in these areas with similar qualifications.

Topics embrace the technological, human and organizational factors associated with the development of CCS, therefore allowing an informed assessment of the expected level of safety of a CCS and identify measures to ensure higher levels of safety. The MSc also provides a deep knowledge of application areas to which CCS are of paramount importance, like automotive, avionics, Industrial Internet of Things, banking, etc.

The MSc has a strong involvement of industrial partners. Students successfully finishing the MSc are equipped both to work in the industry or pursue a research career, including a PhD.

Educational and Professional Outcomes

The educational and scientific-technological training objectives achieved by the graduate are:

- Understanding the various factors at play in modern complex CCS, including the interplay between hardware and software, their functional and non-functional requirements, and organizational and human factors;

- Ability to analyze in a coherent and methodical way a CCS as a whole, identifying potential problems and opportunities for improvement;

- Awareness of the processes of analysis, design, implementation, and operation of CCS, both in adding new value to products developed by companies and in addressing the relevant societal challenges;

- Ability to immediately assume professional positions in industry, at national and international levels, in CCS areas, including aeronautics, automobile, railroad, among others;

- Ability to pursue an academic career through a PhD program (academic or in an industrial context) and/or active participation in national and international research projects.
