Cyber-Physical Systems Co-Design
Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) integrate computation and physical processes, and are becoming pervasive in virtually every aspect of our daily life. Consequently, development of CPSs bring new and complex challenges in terms of design as these systems introduce safety and reliability requirements considerably different from those in general purpose computing and traditional real-time, embedded systems. We address the challenges posed by CPS in relevant fields such as scalable data aggregation, low power and embedded communication, and analysis of temporal behaviour of complex systems. Our researchers have adopted innovative co-design approaches to address scalable data aggregation in large-scale CPS, and are currently further exploring these concepts to propose novel distributed algorithms for CPS co-design.
Leadership & Achievements
Nuno Pereira was Technical Program Committee Co-chair and Mário Alves was General Co-chair of the CONET Workshop 2012. This was the third edition, in a series of highly successful annual events under the umbrella of the CONET European Network of Excellence, and it was co-located with the CPSWeek in April 2012 in Beijing, China. Following up on this distinguished role, Mário Alves and Nuno Pereira organized and guest-edited a special issue of the ACM SIGBED Review (Volume 9, Number 3, July 2012).
Eduardo Tovar gave an invited talk on Wireless Sensor Networks and Cyber-Physical Systems at the 16th International Conference on Real-Time and Network Systems (RTNS), held in October 2008 in Rennes, France.
Eduardo Tovar, together with Prof. Chenyang Lu (Washington University at St. Louis, USA) and Prof. Raj Rajkumar (Carnegie Mellon University, USA), was co-Editor of a Special Issue on Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) and Cooperating-Objects (CO) of the reputed IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics. The title of the special issue is “Cyber-Physical Systems and Cooperating-Objects: the New Frontier for Embedded Systems”.
