ECRTS 2011 comes to Porto!

 

The CISTER Research Center was selected to host the 23rd Euromicro Conference on Real-Time Systems (ECRTS), a forum aimed at covering state-of-the-art research and development in real time computing. ECRTS is the leading European scientific event in the area of real-time and embedded systems, and one of the two main world-wide events in the area, taking usually place in the 1st week of July.  The event usually consists of a main conference, and several satellite workshops. The 2010 edition took place in Brussels, Belgium: http://ecrts.eit.uni-kl.de/ecrts10.

 

 

The selection of CISTER represents an exception from the informal rule of not returning to a previous host location (CISTERhosted the 15th edition of the conference in 2003), a symbol of the world-wide visibility and reputation of the center, and a confidence on the organizational skills and international attractiveness of CISTER.

 

The 2003 edition of the conference (http://www.cister.isep.ipp.pt/ECRTS03/) was a highly successful event, both in terms of technical contents and organization, making the organization of ECRTS 2011 a challenge for the Conference’s General Co-Chairs,CISTER Researchers Eduardo Tovar and Stefan Petters.

Energy-efficient districts discussed in Barcelona

 

CISTER is involved in a number of proposals for the 2010 call for projects in one of the most relevant research programmes running currently in Europe: the ARTEMIS Embedded Computing Systems Initiative.

 

ARTEMIS aims to tackle the research and structural challenges faced by European industry by defining and implementing a coherent Research Agenda for Embedded Computing Systems. The ARTEMIS JU will be managing and co-ordinating research activities through open calls for proposals through a 10-year, €2.5 billion research programme on Embedded Computing Systems.

 

One of the 2010 call project proposals CISTER is involved in is Energy Efficient Districts Clouds (E2D Cloud). Last July 2, Eduardo Tovar participated in a meeting hosted by Atos Origin, in Barcelona, Spain, which gathered together some of the other relevant partners in the initiative, including Acciona (Spain), E-Senza (Germany), Fraunhofer SIT (Germany), Intel (Ireland), CoolPower (Ireland), ElsagDatamat (Italy) and Philips Consumer Lifestyle (The Netherlands).

 

Today buildings consume approximately 40% of the global energy footprint. As such, the energy efficiency of buildings has become a burgeoning area of research for academics, industry and government alike. European Commission initiatives such as Energy Efficient Buildings (E2B) are testimony to the fact.

 

The main objectives of the E2D Cloud (Energy Efficient Districts) project regarding technological and scientific innovations are to provide a coherent and consistent environment, which supports energy efficiency. Various technological innovations, e.g. Smart Buildings, Wireless Sensor Networks or Service Oriented Architectures already exist which help to achieve energy awareness and therefore energy efficiency. Depending on the field of application, these technological innovations are viewed separately. E2D Cloud introduces a holistic approach to energy management and efficiency for whole districts therefore widening the scope for energy efficient buildings (E2B).

 

The E2D initiative is being handled in ISEP by CISTER researchers Nuno Pereira, Mário Alves and Luis Miguel Pinho.

Special Issue on Cyber-Physical Systems and Cooperating Objects

 

CISTER’s researcher and Director Eduardo Tovar, together with Profs. Chenyang Lu (Washington University at St. Louis, USA) and Raj Rajkumar (Carnegie Mellon University, USA), is co-Editor of a Special Issue on Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) and Cooperating-Objects (CO) of the reputed IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics. The title of the special issue is “Cyber-Physical Systems and Cooperating-Objects: the New Frontier for Embedded Systems”.

 

This is one of the most appealing research topics currently being addressed in the wide research area of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and Engineering. CISTER researchers were already in the leading front by organizing the first CPS event in Europe, the CPS-CA’08.

 

Although the IT transformation in the 20th century appeared revolutionary, a bigger change is probably yet to come. The terms Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) and Cooperating-Objects have come to describe the research and technological effort that will tightly conjoin real-world physical objects and computing systems. The integration of physical processes and computing is not new. Embedded systems have been in place since a long time to denote systems that combine physical processes with computing. The revolution will come from extensively networking embedded computing devices, in a blend that involves sensing, actuation, computation, networking, pervasiveness and physical processes. Such systems pose considerable technical challenges, ranging from the distributed programming paradigms to networking protocols with timeliness as a structuring concern, including systems theory that combines “physical concerns” (control systems and signal processing) and “computational concerns” (complexity, schedulability, computability, scalability, etc.).

Wireless Sensor Networks and mobile robots cooperate in Seville

 

The COTS4QoS research cluster, lead by CISTER, is demonstrating some of its major achievements at the CONET second year review meeting in Seville, Spain, next July 19-21.

 

COTS4QoS is one of the research clusters within the CONET Network of Excellence, a FP7 European Network of Excellence in Cooperating Objects (www.cooperating-objects.eu). The CONET Network of Excellence addresses the research and technological effort that will ultimately efficiently allow interlinking the real world physical objects and cyberspace, generally coined as “Cooperating-Objects” or “Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS)”.

 

The COTS4QoS cluster has been addressing the use of standard and COTS technologies to engineer and to enhance the Quality-of-Service (QoS) properties in Cooperating Objects Networks, with a particular focus on Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). The cluster provided relevant results in research and technology, contributing both with seminal research papers and open-source implementations of the specified technologies.

 

For this demonstrator, a WSN grid will be used for the real-time localization and tracking of mobile robots, based on the signal strength of the radio messages (RSS) exchanged between the fixed WSN nodes and the mobile robots. WSN communications are achieved through the IEEE 802.15.4 protocol implementation that has been jointly developed within the cluster, in synergy with the cluster's involvement in the TinyOS 15.4 Working Group.
