ARTEMIS/ITEA co-summit 2013

CISTER Researchers Luis Lino Ferreira, Michele Albano and Ricardo Severino attended the Artemis/ITEA 2013 Co-summit, which was held in Stockholm. The researchers where representing CISTER as members of the Arrowhead, ENCOURAGE and CarCode projects.

The Co-summit – organised by ARTEMIS Joint Undertaking on embedded systems and ITEA, the EUREKA Cluster on software-intensive systems and services – counted about 700 participants from industry, academia, public authorities and press from all over Europe. This year's theme was: “Software innovation: boosting high-tech employment and industry”, which placed into evidence the results from projects Arrowhead and ENCOURAGE.

During the event CISTER members participated on a meeting of the CarCode and on another related to the Arrowhead, projects. Prior to the conference Luis Lino Ferreira and Michele Albano had participated on the 2nd workshop on Interoperability. They also used the opportunity to evaluate the results of other projects and establish links between them.

Another ARTEMIS Project approved for 2014

DEWI (Dependable Embedded Wireless Infrastructure), another ARTEMIS project where CISTER participates was approved. This is another result of the effort developed by CISTER in the last open call for research projects in the strategic ARTEMIS initiative. DEWI is scheduled to start March 2014 and EMC2 (Embedded multi-core systems for mixed criticality applications in dynamic and changeable real-time environments) an Artemis Innovation Pilot Project (AIPP) in April 2014.

DEWI envisions to significantly foster Europe’s leading position in embedded wireless systems and smart (mobile) environments such as vehicles, railway cars, airplanes and buildings. Each of these environments is reflected as a domain in the project, and CISTER’s main work is in the Aeronautics domain (SP2), led by CISTER researchers. CISTER is also involved in management and architectural work in the Interoperability domain (SP6) that is responsible for finding commonalities between the several application domains. DEWI is also a success case as it has the biggest industrial Portuguese participation in an Artemis project. Besides CISTER, the project involves Critical Software, Critical Materials and GMV.

Wireless Workshop @Airbus Group

CISTER researcher Nuno Pereira has given a talk about the ongoing efforts on developing a dense WSN for Active Flow Control at the Airbus Group (formerly EADS) Wireless Workshop in Munich, Germany.

In aeronautics, wireless communication is considered one of the enablers of efficient maintenance; it will reduce the configuration effort, and is a means to provide new services to passengers and operators. The Airbus Group Wireless Workshop brought together experience from the Airbus Group and other industries, with the aim of providing an insight into upstream research on wireless technologies and its applicability. The audience of the workshop was composed of representatives from Airbus Group business units, other industries, and academia.

ITEA 2 project CarCode meeting

 CISTER's researcher Michele Albano represented the Portuguese consortium on December 2nd 2013 in the CarCoDe face-to-face project meeting in Stockholm, Sweden, which had the dual goal of discuss the ongoing work and prepare material for the CarCoDe's review meeting, which will be held on February 3rd-4th 2014 at THALES premises in Paris.

CarCoDe (Platform for Smart Car to Car Content Delivery) is an European R&D project, labelled within the ITEA 2 program, with partners such as Cassidian (FR), NXP (FR), Thales C&S (FR), University Paris-East (FR), Easy Innova (SP), Universiry of Girona (SP), and GM (SP). The Portuguese consortium in the project (CISTER, Instituto de Telecomunicações, PT Inovação, IPCB and Evoleo Technologies) is funded under the System of Incentives for Research and Technological Development (SI I&DT) of the National Strategic Reference Framework (QREN).

The project aims at developing a software platform to set up traffic services on ICT ecosystems and business, and at offering a merging layer between automotive industry, traffic service operators and third party developers. Foreseen benefits from CarCoDe include support to the ICT industry for the development of cooperative services in vehicles. CarCoDe demonstrators include a Remote Car Diagnostics scenario, where the vehicle is enabled to proactively warn the driver regarding its condition, and a City Parking scenario, which supports drivers into optimizing car parking strategies in urban environments.
In the project, CISTER leads the task on Cooperative data delivery in wireless networks, which takes care of specifying how information is routed and/or disseminated to the wireless vehicular network. The aim of this task is to propose new efficient approach for data dissemination and routing in cooperative vehicular that are interoperable with the existing ETSI ITS standard drafts and that minimizes latency times and keeps the delivered information flow high and relevant. CISTER will have a special focus on timing analysis and QoS support for the used technologies, such as WAVE and LTE.

CISTER will be hosting both the next Portuguese consortium's meeting, January 16th, and next face-to-face European project meeting in Porto, April 3rd-4th.
