A Real-Time Sensor Network Architecture with Power-Efficient Resource Reservation in IEEE 802.15.4
Ref: HURRAY-TR-050801 Publication Date: 1, Aug, 2005Abstract:
In the past few years there has been a growing interest on wireless sensor networks (WSNs). When used for large-scale applications with time-critical tasks, network responsiveness naturally becomes a major concern. We propose tackling this challenge with ART-WiSe. ART-WiSe is a two-tiered cluster-based
architecture for large-scale WSNs based on the IEEE 802.15.4 protocol. The goal of ART-WiSe is to provide a scalable architecture that extends network coverage and reduces communication delays in large-scale sensor networks using the IEEE 802.15.4 protocol. This protocol provides resource reservation by means of Guaranteed Time-Slots (GTSs). The main contribution of this paper is the provision of a methodology based on Network Calculus to evaluate the real-time guarantees of a GTS allocation. Two models for the service curve provided by a GTS are proposed, and the corresponding delay bounds are derived for a given message stream upper-constrained by the arrival curve α(t) = b + r ·t. We also propose a power-efficient superframe selection method that simultaneously reduces power consumption and enables meeting the delay
requirements of real-time message streams allocating GTSs.
