Presentation Schedule for CISTER Seminar Series (Fall 2009)

Weekly meetings will be held Fridays, 12PM.

November 13,2009 - "Algorithms and System Support for Merge-by-Wire" (efforts @ IIT Bombay)

Gurulingesh Raravi, CISTER/ISEP, Portugal

Talk abstract:
Automakers are trying to make vehicles more intelligent and safe by embedding processors which can be used to implement “by-wire” applications for taking smart decisions on the road or assisting the driver in doing the same. Given this proliferation, there is a need to efficiently utilize and minimize the computational processing requirements without affecting the performance and safety of the applications. The latter is especially important since these by-wire applications are distributed and real-time in nature and involve deadline bound computations on critical data gathered from the environment. These applications have stringent requirements on the freshness of data items and completion time of the tasks. Our work studied one such safety-related automotive application namely, Automatic Merge Control (AMC) which ensures safe vehicle maneuver in the region where two or more roads intersect.
This talk will focus on:
- the proposed algorithms for AMC
- how DSRC-based wireless communication protocol can be leveraged for the development of AMC
- a real-time approach towards designing AMC by integrating mode-change and real-time repository concepts for reducing the processing computational requirements
- simulation and experimental (on robotic platforms) results
- further extension to this work (tentative)

November 6,2009 - On multicores and the problem of bus contention

Dakshina Dasari, CISTER/ISEP, Portugal

Talk abstract:
Embedded computer systems constitute 99% of all processors sold and 40% of all embedded systems are expected to use multicores in 2011. Embedded systems interact with their physical environment and therefore programs must fulfill timing requirements. This talk gives an overview of multicores, the issues related to bus contention and explores the parameters needed to be considered while coming up with a solution to handle this problem.

October 9,2009 - WiDom and Quantity aggregation in Large-Scale Dense WSN

Aida Ehyaei, CISTER/ISEP, Portugal

Talk abstract:
WiDom is a MAC protocol for scheduling sporadic message streams in wireless networks with real-time requirements. This protocol is based on a wired MAC protocol which is used in CAN bus. WiDom is a collision free and fully distributed protocol and supports a large number of priority levels. This protocol, different difficulties in implementing it and the efforts to improve WiDom will be discussed in this talk. Moreover, using this protocol in various applications of quantity aggregation in wireless sensor networks and also scalability issues of WiDom are the other topics will be covered in the seminar.
